PHNOM PENH: The Minister of Public Works and Transport, Senior Minister Sun Chanthol, has said that road accidents in Cambodia kill an average of five people per day, equivalent to 150 people per month, while causing an estimated loss of about US $450 million from the national budget every year.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of a new Vehicle Technical Inspection Center in Sen Sok district, Phnom Penh, on Tuesday morning, 20 December 2022, Senior Minister Sun Chanthol remarked that the number of monthly deaths from road accidents is equal to the number of people that can fill a plane, which is a matter of concern for society as a whole.
"If you look at the data, it is very concerning! Five people per day sounds like a small number; 150 people is hard to comprehend. If the casualties from road accidents in Cambodia are equivalent to one plane crash per month, the number is too high, so let's work together to reduce road accidents,” said the Senior Minister.
He further urged people to obey traffic laws, particularly the requirement to have regular technical inspectons of vehicles, and to not neglect protecting their own life, as well as the lives of others, while driving on the road.
